Social Media Marketing – A Brief Overview

Social Media has become a house-hold phrase that marketing, using this medium is becoming more profitable. Nowadays, it is estimated that three out of five Americans use some form of social media, whether it is Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.

Social MediaSome people use all of them. Blogs are other forms of social marketing in that they discuss topics that people subscribe to daily. As a result of social media and its dominance in our everyday activities, it is a good place to target prospective buyers for products and services, without knowing who they are.

Here is a brief overview of four of the social media: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Blog.

1. Facebook is a marketing medium, whereby a Facebook Fan Page can be created that promotes a website and its products or services. Those who like your Fan Page can click the “Like” icon, either on your main website, or on the Fan Page. Visitors will gain access to your website’s products or services and make purchase if they also like what you are offering. This is a good way to drive traffic to your site and also links to your site.

If you are using Facebook Ads to market your site, products, or services, the process is simple because Facebook makes it easy to selectively market to your target audience. Facebook uses personal information given at the time of registration to target ads to its members.

For third party ads, the same data is used; all you do is select which group (age group, male or female, geographic location, households, income, social activities, etc.) to target your ads to and you are done. You can run the ad as long as you want, depending on your budget.

2. Twitter, like Facebook, is also a marketing platform in that you can tweet information about your products or services to your “Followers” with link back to your website, where your followers who like what you are offering can purchase from your website.

For Twitter, you are limited to 140 characters, including your site’s link. Therefore, your message should be concise and to the point. Unlike Facebook where you have only one Facebook account and other Fan Pages are linked to that account, Twitter allows you to open as many Twitter accounts as you have. Therefore, you can have a twitter account for any number of websites you have in any niche or market.

Twitter has just established its business account where businesses can market their products and services, using ads that target followers. Like Facebook, Twitter also uses data collected from members to target these ads.
